Day #7

I can start right off telling you that this is getting way harder than I realized. I am not sure I will ever get to 1000 boxes, and there will be days I will not want to unpack ten boxes. th-4

But, then that is really the reason I am blogging about the experience–to force myself to get this done.

But there are two big problems:

1) Much of this stuff is now neatly packed into boxes, bins and bags. If I unpack them, they will be loose, with nowhere to go until we get the house finish. It is nice to know kind of where some of the things are, but much of it is just going to stay packed.

2) Many, many of these boxes should have never seen another box. The stuff should have been given away, sold, trashed or  used up. So if all I accomplish with this little exercise is getting that accomplished, I guess it is worth it.

Box #61

th-3  Jay’s baseball hat and shoes. This is going to the garage. I guarantee you if it takes up space there, it will be used, trashed or given away.

Box #62

My smaller exercise ball. So that’s where the little tyke is.

Box #63

th-4   Business cards. These are the old rolodex of people I no longer have contact with. It’s so hard to throw these people away, but really–it’s been 25 years!

Box #64

Mortars and pestles. This is memories of my pharmacologist daddy. They are sentimental. Creative people would figure out how to use them, other than packing them in a box and opening them every ten or twenty years.  But, I have to say, I do think of my daddy so fondly every time I see them.th-5

Box #65

trophy-50  Peter’s high school fitness trophy, some games and assorted high school stuff. Wasn’t this suppose to move with the kid?

Box #66

th-6  Glassware–the good beer glasses, and my rare, collectable Mickey Mouse Christmas Carol glasses I got as a gift when I was a film critic.

Box #67

Photos. Waiting to be scanned and saved.

Box #68

Cables and cords for various electronic gizmos.

Box #69

Socks. They used to be rolled up in my old CD tower case. Now they are rolled up in a bag. They are going to stay there.

Box #70   th-7

More condiments, spices and herbs. Remind me that I don’t have to make every exotic recipe I think looks yummy if it entails ordering things like pomegranate molasses from Amazon. Does anyone hear vanilla paste? (I was just about to order that).

Day #6

Box #51

Jay’s trike transmission parts. At one time this was a nifty invention that could have made a lotta dough. Now it is a box to unpack or store.   th-4

Box #52

Cookbooks. More and more of these. Did I tell you at one time I subscribed to the Cookbook of the Month Club? Well, I have proof.

Box #53

th-5  Bedroom slippers. Nightgowns. Old friends. Well, it seems like it when you’re wearing shoes all the time. Need those comfy slippers. But these in the picture look actually more comfy than mine. Hmm. Maybe time for new ones.

And my bathroom scale. Do I want this? Yes.

Box #54

Martha Stewart Living magazines. Now to show you just how important these have been, you need to visit my daughter’s wonderful new blog at: www.vanillaplummedia.com and read her recipe for the Watermelon Bombe. Wowie. You will love what she did with MSL’s idea.  6a00d8341ef22f53ef016760cef7e5970b-500wi

Box #55

Rags. These are needed, not heavy and unpack able. Yay!

Box #56

Plastic wrap, aluminum foil, baggies. You might even think sometimes I AM organized!

Box #57

Cups. Styrofoam. No need to unpack all. These were purchased years ago for church and now we need them. If we get a kitchen before they run out, we may donate them, because by then I will be so tired of styrofoam.

Box #58

Desk drawer things. Casino cards with their lariats. We have a lot of these. You would think we visit a lot. We don’t. But this picture does not look unlike the number of cards, and variety in this box.  Now that Atlantic City is going bankrupt–which I can understand because we went the once and hated it, maybe some of these cards will become collector’s items.th-6

Box #59

Dresser top things: perfume. Angels, periscope.

Box #60

th-8   Food. Finally found the mixed pea soup mix. Now I can use the crock pot instead of the rice cooker. But Hubby has given me a BIG table for my cookware, food items and assorted utensils. And, today we got hot water, so I can actually USE things I have to wash.

Day #5

Box #41

Cassette tapes. OK. I haven’t heard these since 1995. I don’t even know if I still have a cassette player. Yes there are memories. But, no I am not going to be listening to these any time soon. So they are going into the trash.  il_570xN.249220363

Box #42

My brother’s slides. These are at least 60 years old. I am not going to be looking at his slides of the Garden of the Gods, Bryce Canyon, or anything else in these boxes. I do not have a slide projector. I can take these pictures myself, or look at them online from other photographers. I am sorry to say, my brother’s excellent photography just isn’t important to me.  It’s a long story. I may write it as fiction someday. I may not. He is gone. They are now going to be gone too. Call me heartless, but they too will hit the trash.

th-14

Box #43

Books. It shouldn’t surprise me that the large majority of these boxes are going to be books. We moved 17,000 pounds from IL to CT and 4,000 were books. That cost $4,000. We will not be moving 4000 pound of books again. I will not trash these. I will give them away or put them back on shelves. But, there will not be this many ever again,  no matter how much I love them all. They are a piece of my life. They are memories. But they are also heavy,  in every sense of the word.

Box #44  th-15

Computer stuff. Old. We will remove the hard drive and throw the old computer away. And the old printer. And the old keyboard–well maybe not the keyboard. The old mice, the old cords. But the power strip we will keep, use NOW and find useful.

Box #45

Nigh table books and magazines. Jay’s Rifleman. Jay’s books.

Box #46

Various kitchen things. Spring roll wraps. I never did learn how to use these.  I do enjoy them in Vietnamese restaurants. I will have them there. Trash.  th-16

Box #47

Clock. Flour sifter. Shell soaps. Arm sling. Hmm. More evidence of the powers of disorganization. I think these were thrown in a box last minute maybe.

Box #48

Jay’s brackets. Garage tools. Yay!! These go into the garage, my respite for all things I DO NOT have to find a place for.  th-17

Box #49

Master bath shampoo, conditioners, soaps and such from the apartment.

Box #50  th-18

Old passport? 2007. Are you kidding? Jay’s desk.

Day #4

Box #31

This is getting tougher. Fun idea. A lot of work! But, really, 40 boxes in 4 days. I really should get a medal. Some of these sat in our apartment storage for FIVE years.

Found the kitchen box with the electric skillet. This means eventually, when the sewer leak is fixed, I can cook in something  besides the rice cooker, which I have to say has done Herculean duty as a min-crockpot that only takes 20 minutes. I make one-dish meals from brown rice, frozen peas and frozen salmon. Yum. Actually not bad.   th-11

Box #32

Yay! Jay’s desk. His stuff again, so I now have headphones, and stationery. (Remember, “e” for letter and “a” for at rest. :)

Box #33

Pantry. Cleaning supplies, ice cream maker, L.O.C. Wipes.

Box #34  Unknown-2

Utility kitchen drawer. Spatula, knives, cheese knives, etc. No where to go on these. They stay in the box for now.

Box #35

Bedroom. CD’s, DVD’s, clock radio, massage oil. Yeah, right. someday!  th-12

Box #36

Kitchen again. Under counter. Crocs, meat loaf pan, mixing bowls–we have too many of these too. Why?

Box #37

Shoes. Boots. Good to know where these comfy slip-ons are. Now if I only had my black pants. Where o where?  th-13

Box #38

Guitar Bag. Jay’s music and guitar strings and stuff.

Box #39

Office. External Hard Drive Back Up. My laptop keeps reminding me to do this. Now I may. CD external drive.

Box #40

Jay’s closet. Have to get these on his shelf. Not really room. They seem happier in the box. Or is that wishful thinking?

Day #3

Box #21

th-9

More spices. Lemon oil, walnut oil, avocado oil, olive oil, peppermint oil.  OK, just so you know, mice hate the smell of peppermint. So I got a bottle from Amazon to spray in the basement of the River House. There was a mouse nest. The house had been empty for more than a year. The peppermint oil solution did the trick.

Box #22

Office shelves. Yay! Found my devotional.

Box #23

More office files.

th-10Box #24

More olive oil. Garlic. Food. I am learning we have a lot of booze, a lot of spices, and an amazing number of bottles of oil. I never want to run out of olive oil, but really didn’t know I had five bottles going.

Box #25

First aid. Rubber gloves. Vacuum attachments. Hmm, so that’s where they are!

Box #26

More New Yorker magazines. I know.

Box #27  Unknown-1

Bathroom. “Do you know where my deodorant is?” he says. I didn’t. I do now. Hotel shampoos and soaps. These might be good if he needs to get a hot shower at the gym at work–since we don’t have one here yet.  You do learn a lot about a person from their boxes, don’t you!

Box #28

More spices. Cheese grater. I think when I get hot water, electricity and appliances, I will make a lot of spicy foods.

Box  #29

Thermoses. Is that thermii? Honey. Other condiments. Dear me, we do store a lot of those. I will pare down and not rebuy in this quantity again.

Box #30

Chopsticks, plastic ware. Just a small box.

Day #2

Box #11

Booze  th

Box #12

More booze

Box #13

More? I tell you, we’re not big drinkers. Well, it’s all still there to prove it. But, maybe I am secretly hiding it so we don’t become big drinkers.

Box #14    8068992-a-drunk-man-lying-unconscious-on-the-floor

Plastic bags, travel tissues, French press scoop, paper products (cups, plates). It is clear I am not as organized as I believe myself to be.

Box #15

Spices, Nutella. How many containers of fennel seeds does one need? And do I need any if I have anise seeds?

Box #16

Cookbooks

Box #17    Unknown

More cookbooks, and nutrition books.

Box #18

Tea and spices, We have a lot of spices and herbs.

Box #19

Macaroon bar mix. Coffee. Canned goods.

Box #20   th-1

New Yorker Magazines. These are for Mary. I was taking her one a month. I need to step up that program.

Day #1

Day 1 September 1, 2014

Box #1

Children’s books.  th-5

“Do you have any fairy tales?” Aida asked me before we left Bigelow. I could only find one, but box #1 contained a few more, and many other stories, most of which I can’t give away because my children will want them.

Box #2

Office stuff.  cavalier5_calendar_print

Calendars with pictures of gardens, dogs, and also the high school papers my daughter left me containing an outline of the history of theatre. I don’t think we need these things. The dogs are cute though, and the gardens are pretty. I might save them.

Box #3  th-6

Cleaning supplies and paper products. Yes! Just what I need in a gutted house with no appliances and dishes packed.

Box #4 Jay’s stuff.Phew! Not my problem, not my job. His guitar music and biz cards. His job–after he finishes the electric, the plumbing, the heating manifold, the the insulation, the radiant tubing, the dry wall, installing flooring and cabinets, and whatever else is also his job. Oh phooey. Maybe his stuff is my job.

Box #5

Here I believed I was organized, but the contents of this box prove otherwise: business literature, snow shoes, towels, peroxide, matches, measuring cups. Who packed this one?

Box #6 Food.

The baking supplies from the cabinet over my loft microwave. Plus a grill brush, soap and our wine corkscrew (Yay! do we NEED this!).

Box #7 Food.

Box #8

Second bathroom medicine cabinet.

First aid and mouthwash.

Box #9 More first aid.  th-7

Are we that injury prone? Chips and sugar (which spilled). Box #10 Mardi Gras mask, hangers, supplements. Mostly close stuff. Not sure how vitamins got in that box.

Box #10 Closet stuff   th-8

Mardi Gras mask, hangers, supplements. Mostly closet stuff. Not sure how vitamins got in that box.
